If you’ve been dreaming of visiting Italy’s heavenly Amalfi Coast and aren’t sure which towns to explore, I’ve got you covered! These three towns are a great place to start. You’ll enjoy spectacular views, delicious local cuisine, and a rich cultural experience. Discover what makes each town unique and why you should consider adding them to your itinerary.
1). Sorrento
This is my personal favorite! Nestled above the shimmering blue waters of the Bay of Naples, the beautiful city of Sorrento is often called the "Land of Colors"—and understandably so. The colorful houses, abundance of lemon and orange trees, and expansive views of the bay make for breathtaking photos. Here are a few must-visit spots in Sorrento:
- Piazza Tasso: This is Sorrento's most famous square, known for its vibrancy and charm. A central hub for exploring the town, Piazza Tasso is home to the intricately carved sculpture of the town’s patron saint. It’s a great place to start getting to know the area, enjoy some people-watching, and indulge in a bit of shopping.
- Sorrento Cathedral: While the front of this stunning structure dates back to the early 20th century, its doors date back to the 11th century. The exterior might appear modest, but step inside to witness its elegance—towering arches, a gorgeously carved marble altar, and a beautiful nativity scene are among the cathedral’s main highlights.
2). Amalfi
The town that both the Amalfi Coast and Always Amalfi are named after! Facing south, Amalfi offers breathtaking views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. After snapping some photos by the water, it's time to explore what else this charming town has to offer.
- Piazza Duomo: At the heart of Amalfi is Piazza Duomo, overlooked by the stunning Saint Andrew’s Cathedral. A must-see, the cathedral boasts a mix of medieval, Arab, and Baroque influences. After admiring the cathedral, you’ll find plenty of quaint cafes nearby to rest and refresh.
- Valle delle Ferriere: For those who enjoy hiking, a 30-minute trek through the Riserva Statale Valle delle Ferriere leads to the Valle delle Ferriere, where you can witness spectacular waterfalls and lush foliage. It's a hidden gem that showcases the natural beauty of the region.
3). Positano
Positano has captured the hearts of visitors for many years. Often a stopping point for those en route to other Amalfi Coast destinations, it’s a town not to be overlooked. Tucked away in the hills overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, Positano is known for its striking emerald green dome atop the Santa Maria Assunta church, which is famous for its black Madonna painting.
- Local Shops and Beach: Wander through Positano's charming streets lined with local shops selling Amalfi Coast-made gifts. When you're ready to unwind, head to the beach. It's the perfect place to relax after a day of exploring, with plenty of restaurants and bars offering breathtaking views of the coastline.
